Pride and Prejudice
is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in London in 1813.
The novel was first published in the United States in 1832; the title being 'Elizabeth Bennet or Pride and Prejudice'.
The story is the finding of true love between the free-spirited Elizabeth Bennet and the aloof Mr Darcy.
Pride and Prejudice is the classic 'Regency romance' novel and one of the best loved novels in English Literature.
Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine of Pride and Prejudice, is the second oldest of five sisters living with their father and mother in the countryside near London. Mrs Bennet's main aim in life is to get her daughters married to eligible - and rich - suitors. Mr Darcy is both very rich and eligible; the problem is that Elizabeth does not like him - at first.
The novel was originally titled 'First Impressions' by Jane Austen; she renamed the story 'Pride and Prejudice' after writing a second draft.
Jane Austen sold the copyright of Pride and Prejudice to a publisher in London for £110. When first published in London the novel was priced at 18 shillings; a great deal of money in Regency times.
